Watermark a PDF privately: why it matters

What the watermark is, in the file
The text you choose — DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, a company name, a recipient’s name — is drawn into every page’s content, not attached as a removable note. It travels with the file wherever it is opened or printed, and it cannot be switched off in a reader the way an annotation can. You see it before applying: the live preview shows position, size, colour (grey, red or blue) and opacity on your actual pages.
Subtle or bold
For a background mark that leaves the text readable, drop the opacity and use grey; for a copy you want nobody to mistake for final, raise it and use red. Diagonal across the page is the conventional layout for DRAFT; a small line in a corner suits “Copy for J. Müller”. Check the preview on a page with dense text before you apply — a mark that is faint on a blank area can still cover a table.
Labelling a copy before you send it
Naming the recipient in the watermark is the simplest way to deter onward sharing of a quote, a manuscript or a report: each copy carries who it went to. Because the marking happens in your browser, the unmarked original never leaves your machine — you stamp the copy, send the copy, keep the original clean.

Can the watermark be removed by the recipient?
