Remove the background from a portrait — in your browser, no upload

Updated 22 August 2026

Remove Background cuts a person out of a photo on your own device using an open-source portrait model: you get a PNG with a transparent background, or the subject on a solid colour. The model (about 38 MB of program code) downloads once on first use and is cached; the photo itself is never sent anywhere. It is built for photographs of people; on product shots and other subjects it drops much of the subject, so it is not offered as a general cut-out tool.

Cut a person out of a photo entirely in the browser — transparent PNG or a solid colour, no upload, model downloaded once. What it does well, and what it does not.

UnboundPDF is a free suite of 54 PDF and image tools that run entirely in your browser — merge, split, compress, edit text, OCR in 126 languages, redact, sign, convert and archive to PDF/A. Your document is read and written by the page on your own device; there is no document-upload endpoint in the core tools, no account, no watermark and no daily cap. Every result can be checked — with the Network tab, or with the Document Passport the Workspace writes for a chain of steps.

  1. Open Remove Background and add a photo of a person (JPG, PNG or WebP).
  2. The first time, allow the one-off model download (about 38 MB); it is cached for next time.
  3. Choose transparent or a background colour, and download the PNG.

Open Remove Background to do this in your browser — the steps above are the whole procedure; the rest of this page is what to expect at each one.

What the cut-out looks like

Hair is the hard part of any background removal. The model keeps fine hair where the contrast allows and produces a soft edge where it does not; you will see the result at full size before you download, so judge it on your own photo rather than on a demo.

Where it fits

ID and passport photos, profile pictures, a team page, a cut-out for a slide. For a photo that needs a specific background, choose the colour here or take the transparent PNG into the tool that needs it — Passport Photo paints the rule's colour and crops to size.

Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android

Same page on all of them. The first run downloads the model; a phone on a slow connection will notice that once and not again. Processing time follows your device — a recent laptop takes a few seconds per photo.

Troubleshooting

The download is slow. The model is about 38 MB and is fetched once; wait for it, then every later photo starts immediately. Part of the subject is missing. If the subject is not a person, the model is the wrong tool; for people, try a photo with more contrast between hair and background. Nothing happens on an old browser. The model needs WebAssembly; update the browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The model runs in your browser tab. The only download is the model itself, fetched once from unboundpdf.com as program code; the photo stays on your device. You can confirm this with the Network panel open, as the PDF Privacy Lab shows.

Why does it work on people but not on products?

It is a portrait segmentation model: it was trained to separate people from backgrounds. On objects, pets and scenes it tends to remove parts of the subject, so the page says so rather than offering it as a general cut-out.

Can I use the result for a passport photo?

Yes — save the transparent PNG, then open Passport Photo, which paints the required background colour behind it and crops to the size.
