Remove a watermark from a PDF — when it is possible, and when it is not

Updated 22 August 2026

A watermark can be removed when it exists as a separate object in the PDF — a watermark or stamp annotation, a re-used form XObject, or a repeated transparent or rotated block in the page content. Remove Watermark finds those candidates, lists them with the pages they appear on, removes the ones you tick, and verifies on the output bytes that the references are gone. When a mark is part of a scanned page image, there is no object to remove, and the tool says so instead of painting over it.

How PDF watermarks are stored, which kinds can be removed cleanly, how to do it in your browser with verification on the output, and why flattened scans are refused.

UnboundPDF is a free suite of 54 PDF and image tools that run entirely in your browser — merge, split, compress, edit text, OCR in 126 languages, redact, sign, convert and archive to PDF/A. Your document is read and written by the page on your own device; there is no document-upload endpoint in the core tools, no account, no watermark and no daily cap. Every result can be checked — with the Network tab, or with the Document Passport the Workspace writes for a chain of steps.

  1. Open Remove Watermark and add the PDF.
  2. Read the candidate list: each entry names the kind of object and the pages it appears on.
  3. Tick the watermarks to remove — leave stamps or headers you want to keep — and run.
  4. The result panel reports that the removed objects are absent from the output; download it.

Open Remove Watermark to do this in your browser — the steps above are the whole procedure; the rest of this page is what to expect at each one.

Three ways a watermark lives in a PDF

An annotation. Many tools add a watermark as a Watermark or Stamp annotation sitting above the page — the easiest to detect and remove. A form XObject. A drawing re-used on every page, referenced from each page's resources; remove the reference and the mark is gone everywhere. Page content. Text or paths drawn into the content stream, usually with transparency and a rotation; the tool recognises the repeated pattern across pages and offers it as a candidate.

What "verified" means here

After removal the tool re-reads the output and checks that the removed objects are no longer referenced anywhere in the file — not just invisible, but absent. That is the same instinct as our redaction: a change you can check on the bytes, not a promise.

Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android

Same page everywhere; the file is processed on your device and downloads from the tab.

Troubleshooting

No candidates found. The mark is probably part of a page image (a scan) — see the refusal note; or it is a header the tool did not classify as a watermark, in which case Redact PDF can remove a region on chosen pages. A stamp I wanted to keep is listed. Leave it unticked. The file is password-protected. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF (you need the password).

Frequently asked questions

Why does it say the watermark cannot be removed?

Because the mark is drawn into the page image — common in scans and in PDFs exported as pictures. There is no separate object to delete; removing it would mean repainting pixels, which this tool does not do.

Will it damage the rest of the page?

It removes only the selected objects and their references; the page's text and images stay as they were. The output is re-read and the removal is verified on the file you download.

Is removing a watermark allowed?

Only where you have the right to — your own documents, or files whose owner permits it. Watermarks on purchased or licensed content usually mark ownership; respect that.
