How to merge and compress PDFs on a Mac

You do not need to install anything on a Mac. Open the merge tool in Safari or Chrome, add your files, drag them into order and download one PDF; then run the compressor on the result. Both engines run inside the browser tab, so the documents stay on your Mac.

  1. Open Merge PDF in Safari, Chrome or Firefox and add the files you want combined.
  2. Drag the files into the order you want, then merge and download the single PDF.
  3. Open Compress PDF, add that merged file and run Balanced first.
  4. Check the reported before/after size, switch to Maximum only if a scan is still too big.

Nothing here is Mac-specific software. The merging and compression engines run inside the browser tab, which is why the steps are identical on macOS, on Windows, and on a Chromebook.

The two-step route on macOS

Combine first, compress second: a merged file gives the compressor the whole set of images at once. Open UnboundPDF's Merge PDF in whichever browser is already in front of you, drop the files in, drag them into order, and download the combined document. Then hand that download to the compressor and run Balanced. Nothing to install, no App Store step, no account.

Where Preview helps, and where it stops

Preview is a capable viewer and it can combine documents: open one PDF, show the thumbnail sidebar, and drag pages or whole files into it. That is genuinely useful for two short files, but it gets fiddly with a stack of them and the drag target is easy to miss.

Compression is the weaker half. Preview's Export dialog exposes a Quartz filter commonly named Reduce File Size, and it applies one fixed recipe: no target, no quality choice, and no report of what the trade cost you. Sometimes it is fine; sometimes it flattens a scan harder than you would have chosen, or returns a file barely smaller than the original. If your macOS version behaves differently, trust what you see on screen rather than any guide.

What target-based compression changes

The browser compressor asks for a reduction target and reports the number it actually achieved. Measured on 13 August 2026: a 784 KB three-page scan came out of Balanced at 418 KB, and Maximum took the same file to 238 KB. When a file cannot give what you asked for, the panel says so — a 6.5 MB paper full of vector figures yielded 3% in Chrome, reported as 3%. Balanced or Maximum

Balanced re-compresses the photographs inside the file and leaves text, fonts and vector art alone, so a merged contract still selects and searches like the original. Maximum re-renders every page as an image: the smallest output, correct for scans, wrong for text. On a mostly-text document Maximum can make the file dramatically larger, and the panel will tell you to keep your original rather than hiding it.

Trimming the pack before you send it

If only part of a document belongs in the bundle, take it out before merging — Split PDF pulls the pages you want, and Organize PDF reorders or removes pages inside a file. When one recipient has a hard per-file cap, Split by Size produces parts that each fit under a size you set. Pages that came in sideways from a scanner can be fixed with Rotate PDF first.

Scope

The work happens on your Mac, so a very large file takes as long as your machine needs and benefits from free memory. On 2026-08-15, on an Apple M4 with 16 GB, merging and Balanced compression completed a 300-page 119 MB scan and a 500-page 99.6 MB document on Chrome's, Firefox's and Safari's engines, every output reopened in an independent PDF reader — the largest documents we watched finish. Verify the no-upload claim yourself

Do not take a privacy sentence on trust. In Safari enable the Develop menu and open Web Inspector; in Chrome use DevTools. Switch to the Network tab, then run a merge and watch what is requested: the page's own scripts, and no request carrying your document. Frequently asked questions

Can I merge PDFs on a Mac without Preview?

Yes. Preview is one route, but not the only one. A browser tool combines the files in the tab you already have open and behaves the same on every Mac, whichever macOS version you run.

Does macOS have a proper PDF compressor built in?

Preview's Export menu offers a Quartz filter usually labelled Reduce File Size. It works in one shot: no size target and no quality control, so the result can be softer than you wanted or barely smaller than you hoped. A tool that takes a target and reports the true result gives you more control.

Do I need a different tool on an Apple Silicon Mac?

No. The work is done by the browser, so an M-series Mac and an older Intel Mac run the same code, and a faster machine finishes sooner. The figures above are from an Apple M4; an Intel Mac completes the same jobs and takes longer.

Are my documents uploaded from my Mac?

No document upload takes place. The page fetches its own scripts and then works on the files locally. Open Web Inspector or DevTools, watch the Network tab while you merge, and you can verify that for yourself before trusting a file that matters.
