A grading pack is a pile of named pupil work, sometimes with home addresses on a permission slip and comments you would never want forwarded. Doing the PDF work on the classroom laptop rather than on an upload site means that pile never becomes a copy on a server you cannot audit.
From photos and scans to a handout
The fastest classroom workflow is a phone photo or a flatbed scan, and both arrive as images. JPG to PDF turns them into a document with one image per page, accepting JPG, PNG and WebP, so a set of photographed pages becomes a single handout you can share or print. Photographs of pages are rarely straight — run Deskew PDF before anything else, and use Crop PDF to trim the desk and the shadow out of frame. Build the grading pack, then take it apart again
Marking goes faster from one file than from thirty. Merge PDF combines the scans into a class set in the order you choose, and Add Page Numbers stamps consistent numbering so you and a colleague can talk about "page 14" and mean the same page. Make scanned homework searchable and quotable
OCR PDF recognises text inside your browser and lays an invisible layer over the original scan, so a printed worksheet becomes searchable while looking untouched. That is genuinely useful for building a question bank from past papers, and extracting the text afterwards is a copy away. Be realistic about handwriting: recognition of handwritten answers is unreliable, and we would rather say so than let you plan a marking workflow around it. Lock a worksheet, or stamp it before it circulates
Two different jobs get confused here. Flatten PDF bakes filled form fields into fixed page content so the answers cannot be changed — the default keeps the text selectable rather than re-rendering the page. Protect PDF is the other one: it encrypts the file with AES so it will not open without a password, and lets you decide whether printing and copying are allowed. If the point is only to mark status, Watermark PDF stamps DRAFT or a class name across every page with a live preview. None of these stop a determined pupil retyping the content, and pretending otherwise would be a lie.
