Hand in one file, not seven

Most submission systems want a single PDF, and most assignments start life as several: a cover sheet from the department, a written chapter, a spreadsheet exported to PDF, and a folder of scanned lab sheets. Get under the portal's size cap

Upload forms cap file size, and a thesis with figures blows past the cap fast. Compress the scans, not the prose: measured on 13 August 2026, a 3-page scan went from 784KB to 418KB in Balanced and 238KB in Maximum, and a scanned letter went 141KB to 84.6KB in Balanced. Text-first pages behave completely differently — they barely shrink, and forcing image re-render on them can make the file bigger, which the tool will tell you rather than hide. Scanned readings that you can actually search

A photographed or scanned reading is a picture of text — Ctrl+F finds nothing in it. OCR PDF runs recognition in your browser and lays an invisible text layer over the original pages, so the scan looks the same but is searchable and quotable. Straighten crooked pages with Deskew PDF first; recognition quality follows the scan far more than the tool. Fix the page instead of re-exporting everything

A wrong date on the title page does not deserve a full re-export from your word processor, especially at 3am. The PDF Editor changes existing text in place and re-sets it in the document's own embedded fonts where that is safe, so the line still matches its neighbours — the mechanics are in how to edit text in a PDF. Crop PDF trims the visible area — but note that cropping hides what falls outside the box rather than deleting it, so it is a layout tool, never a privacy one.

Signing a declaration with Fill & Sign places a drawn or typed signature image on the page — right for everyday forms; if your institution requires a certificate-based signature, it will say so. Compression is measured: text pages do not collapse the way scans do. Whether a portal accepts a file is the institution's rule — check its submission guidance. A large scanned book is processed on your own machine; nothing in our benchmark stopped at any size we tested, and before a large job starts the tool checks the document against your device and tells you what it found.
