Headers & Footers
Running headers and footers — text, date, page X of N, filename.
Headers & Footers adds running text to the pages you choose — every page by default — a title, the date, "page X of N", the filename — with margins and alignment you set and a distinct first page if you need one. The text is real page content, searchable and selectable, and the file is processed on your device.
Headers & Footers adds running text to the top and bottom of a PDF in six slots — left, centre and right in each band — with tokens for the page number, the total, today's date and the file name. Margins are adjustable, and the first page can carry its own text or none at all.
How to use Headers & Footers — steps & common uses
What people use Headers & Footers for
Anyone finishing a report, a manuscript or a circulated draft that needs consistent running headers and footers.
- Add a running title and page numbers before printing
- Stamp a draft date on every page
- Put the file name in the footer of a circulated document
- Leave the title page clean while numbering the rest
- Number a chapter starting from its real page number
How to use Headers & Footers
- Add your PDF; it is read on your device.
- Type into any of the six slots, using {n}, {N}, {date} and {filename} where a value belongs.
- Choose whether the first page matches the rest, carries nothing, or has its own text; set the size, margins and page range.
- Click Add headers and footers, then download the result.
Good to know: Headers and footers are real text; set a distinct first page for title pages.
Questions about Headers & Footers 7
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. UnboundPDF processes PDFs locally in the browser — documents are not uploaded to a server. We have no backend that receives, stores, or scans your files.
Which tokens can I use?
{n} for the page number, {N} for the total, {date} for today's date and {filename} for the file name. Anything else is printed exactly as typed.
Can the first page be different?
Yes. It can match the rest, carry no header or footer at all, or have its own six slots — which is what a title page usually needs.
Can I start the page numbering at something other than 1?
Yes. The starting value for {n} is set separately from the page range, so a chapter can begin at 47.
Is the text selectable?
Yes. Each slot is drawn as real text, so it can be selected, searched and copied, and it prints sharply.
What happens on a rotated page?
The slots follow the page as the reader sees it, so a header stays at the top of the page on screen rather than at the top of the unrotated page box.
What if my text is longer than the page is wide?
It is drawn on one line and is not wrapped or shrunk, so it can run past the margin. Shorten the text or reduce the size if that happens.

How your files are handled
The work runs on your own device, inside the browser tab — so there is no server to send your document to.
- Nothing is uploaded. We have no backend that receives or stores documents, so we cannot see your files during processing or after.
- Your device does the work. Large documents are handled in stages, pages are rendered as you reach them, and each job is checked against your device before it starts — so a long run takes longer on a phone than on a laptop, nothing is queued behind other people's jobs, and you can stop a run at any point without touching your original file.
- No account and no watermark. The output is a clean file you can use anywhere, with no sign-up and no hourly cap.
