A production you can defend: redact, number, label, and log — with hashes

A checklist for small law offices: real redaction verified on the bytes, Bates numbering, exhibit labels, a redaction log and hashes — in the browser.

UnboundPDF is a free suite of 54 PDF and image tools that run entirely in your browser — merge, split, compress, edit text, OCR in 126 languages, redact, sign, convert and archive to PDF/A. Your document is read and written by the page on your own device; there is no document-upload endpoint in the core tools, no account, no watermark and no daily cap. Every result can be checked — with the Network tab, or with the Document Passport the Workspace writes for a chain of steps.

Quick start. Redact → Verify → Bates → Exhibits → Log. Every step on your own machine; every output hashed.

1. Redact for real

Do the whole chain in the Workspace, which records each step. Remove the text from the content, not over it; read the verification line; rasterise the page it names as not fully clearable. Search the output for each term you redacted.

The distinction this whole page turns on: a box drawn over text versus the text actually deleted from the page content.

2. Verify independently

The Redaction Verifier checks the output — and any file the other side sent — for text still under the boxes, invisible text, hidden layers and annotation-only covers. It reports what is present; it cannot see what was removed.

3. Bates-number the set

Agree the prefix and padding, order the files, number continuously. The CSV index records each file's first and last number — attach it to the production letter.

4. Label exhibits

Letters or numbers per the court's practice, cover sheets where required, auto-incremented across the batch with an index.

5. Log and hash

The Redaction Log lists every region with its verification and the SHA-256 of the documents examined; the Workspace passport records every step's hash. Anyone can recompute both. Neither is a certificate; both are checkable records.

6. Metadata and comments

Clear authors and titles with Edit Metadata; strip comments with Remove Annotations; check attachments in your reader before sending.

Troubleshooting

The verifier says "could not check" on pages. Those pages draw through form XObjects; rasterise them in Redact PDF and re-check. Numbers overlap content. Smaller stamp or another corner. Encrypted source. Unlock with the password first.

Frequently asked questions

Are stamps searchable?

Yes — Bates numbers and exhibit labels are real text.

Is the log a certification?

No — a measured record you produce. Whether a redaction meets a legal standard is set by the rules that apply to you.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Every tool runs in the browser; the passport and log carry hashes, not contents.
