Photos inside the PDF, or pictures of the pages? Two tools, one decision

Extract Images returns the original image files stored in a PDF; PDF to JPG renders whole pages. How to choose, resolution consequences, scans.

UnboundPDF is a free suite of 54 PDF and image tools that run entirely in your browser — merge, split, compress, edit text, OCR in 126 languages, redact, sign, convert and archive to PDF/A. Your document is read and written by the page on your own device; there is no document-upload endpoint in the core tools, no account, no watermark and no daily cap. Every result can be checked — with the Network tab, or with the Document Passport the Workspace writes for a chain of steps.

The rule. Want the photo that is inside the document, at its stored resolution — Extract Images. Want the page as a picture — PDF to JPG.

Everything described above runs the same way: the document processed in the browser tab, never sent to a server.

The resolution point

A 4,000-pixel photo placed small on a page is still 4,000 pixels in the file; extraction gives you all of them. Rendering the page at 150 DPI gives you the photo at the page's scale — a fraction of the pixels. For a photo, extract; for a layout, render.

Logos and charts

Vector logos and charts are drawings, not images; extraction returns nothing for them and says so. Render the page, or crop and render, for a picture of a vector.

Embedded images pulled from a mixed PDF — the stored pixels, not screenshots of the page.

Scans

Each scanned page is one image; extraction returns it at the scanner's resolution without re-sampling — cleaner than rendering.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Extract Images find nothing?

The PDF has no embedded rasters — text and vectors only. Render pages instead.

Why are extracted images bigger than on the page?

The PDF scaled them down for display; the stored image keeps its own pixels.

Can I get every page as a PNG?

Yes — PDF to JPG offers image formats and a DPI; choose PNG for exact pixels.
